See a gap near you? Help close it.
You don't need a clubhouse or a big budget. A single outdoor court on spare land at a local sports club can bring squash to thousands of people. Our guide covers every option, from pop-up courts to new clubs, plus funding and planning.

How we worked this out
- Population: Census 2021 usual residents for each neighbourhood (MSOA), grouped into towns using the House of Commons Library local names. A town's position is the population-weighted centre of its neighbourhoods.
- Courts: the 42 clubs and leisure centres listed in the Squash Players App venue database, plus 13 venues just over the county border that serve border towns. Single-court venues count too and are marked in the list. Private schools, military sites, hotels and holiday lets are left out, except where they are the home of a county club, such as Wykeham at Winchester College.
- Distance: straight-line from the town centre to the nearest court. Real journeys are longer, so these figures are generous. Well served is up to 3 km, limited is 3–5 km, and a gap is more than 5 km.
- Limits: this measures where courts are, not whether they are open to the public, affordable or in good condition. Court counts come from the venue database and may be out of date. Boundaries and population data are from the Office for National Statistics under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
